So, what exactly is 'That Girl'?
Well, she's the girl who wakes up at 5am every morning (and definitely doesn't hit her snooze button), she's the girl who always looks put together (even if she's wearing a tracksuit), and she's the girl who never forgets to take her make up off before she goes to bed (even if she's had a gin or two). Basically, she's the girl who's got her life together, the girl society thinks we should strive to be.
A quick scroll through TikTok and every other video on my feed is giving me tips and advice on how I too can become the girl who dresses in neutral tones, looks flawless with a no make-up make up look and knows how to juggle every factor of her life. To be honest, even just writing about it makes me feel a little bit overwhelmed.
It's the trend that everyone is trying to follow right now but I think it's really important to remember that that's all it is; A TREND. In the same way that flared jeans come in and out of fashion, becoming 'That Girl' will soon be a thing of the past. Think about it, what society views as the girl who's got her life together solely depends on what is popular at the time, so being 'That Girl' has probably had hundreds of different definitions over the years which will only continue to change.
Shouldn't 'That Girl' be about becoming the best version of yourself?
I genuinely don't think there's enough hours in the day for people to do everything on the check list to become this kind of girl. Does she even exist? Because I'm pretty sure I've only ever seen her in movies. In my opinion, it's just not an achievable lifestyle (well not for most people anyway). The girls we see online can very easily balance a social life, a gym schedule and a job, but do they ever show them balancing that on top of looking after a family, taking care of a house or having a decent sleep pattern? No, they don't.
It's very easy to feel disheartened because your life doesn't mirror this 'perfect' lifestyle that you see on your screen. Well, I'm here to tell you that you can be your own version of THAT GIRL!
Here's a few little things that make you THAT GIRL (even if you only manage one a week!):
- If you wake up in the morning and make your bed, you are THAT GIRL
- If you manage to make it to the gym one night a week, you are THAT GIRL
- If you schedule in time for a coffee with your friends, you are THAT GIRL
- If you order a Dominos Pizza at 11pm, you are THAT GIRL
- If you have too many cocktails at bottomless brunch, you are THAT GIRL
- If you enjoy being in your own company, you are THAT GIRL
And so the list continues...
We are all THAT GIRL; just because we don't wake up super early, have a regular gym schedule or drink green smoothies every morning, we still have our lives together. We might not have the perfect balance but we still have balance. That's just life; we have priorities, we have different things to juggle and we get tired sometimes but we're only human. Why are we putting pressure on ourselves to be something that isn't realistic?
I think it's time that the definition of 'That Girl' changed.
Becoming 'That Girl' should be about working towards your goals, no matter how big or small they may be. It should be about spreading kindness, supporting our loved ones and doing what makes us happy. Becoming 'That Girl' should be a mindset, not a lifestyle.
It's very easy to sit and compare our lives to every person we scroll past on social media but it's important to remember that most of the people you see probably don't have their lives together either. We're all trying to navigate this weird and wonderful thing called life so it's okay if you're not doing what everyone else is doing; you're prioritising, you're getting your own shit done and you're smashing it!
To the girl reading this, YOU ARE THAT GIRL and I'm proud of you!
Lots of Love,
Meg x
